My Little Grandad

Passed away early this morning. We're so relieved he didn't suffer for long, and his hospital visit was short - and we got to see him.

Our Grandad was such a character. He was my biggest fan, stopping anyone in Tesco to tell them what I was doing. He was so proud, it makes my heart ache.

We'll all miss him, and I apologise for any unanswered emails or messages - but well, this has been why. And also why I'm not travelling up to Birmingham today, couldn't face another drive - I'm abit weary.

I'm glad he was our Grandad, he was always there to get us out of any trouble, which meant we could take risks maybe others may not have been able to do - he was our safety net. And we have so many memories, really funny ones. We'll all really miss him. He was just always there.

Getting olds abit rubbish isn't it......but doesn't it make you realise how precious every day is.

Well, don't want to make my readers sad, so I'll share a funny story from the hospital when we were visiting (thankfully, as a family I think we've always found something to laugh at - keeps you sane doesn't it). As we were leaving my gran stopped on seeing a couple who did stand out from the crowd (she looked as if she may have been a lady of the night with her man!), anyhow, not to far from them Gran stated "funny what you see when you haven't got your gun" - laughing!! Never heard that expression before - bloody glad she didn't have her gun, can you imagine. So that'll be my new expression I recon - cracker isn't it. She was actually really funny, did loads of stuff to make us laugh amongst all the sadness. My little Gran.

  24. Oh Leonie, that's so sad. Mind you, I know what you mean about people saying things that make you laugh when it's the saddest time. When my hubby passed away his mother came to the chapel of rest with me to say goodbye and she said "Ooh, doesn't he look well!"
I had to say to her that I'd seen him looking better!!
I'll be thinking of you and your family. Hugs, Pam xx

  29. Leonie so very sorry to hear about your grandad but as you say that's life and you were very lucky to have known him for so long.
Your gran sounds like my mum that's exactly the kind of thing she would say and to be honest I have said myself more than once. Sometimes life is horrid but we don't have another option, take heart that his suffering was short and he will be watching over you.

  30. You are so right about the humour that gets us all through. Today we are scattering my Dad's ashes on his Mum's grave. It'll be sad but he is currently sitting on the piano.

You take good care, sweet Leonie.

  32. I'm so sorry for yoour loss Leonie. I never knew either of my Grandfathers, both dies before I was born and there's only so much other people can tell you about them. Actually having your OWN memories will hurt for a while - any loss hurts; but in time, those memories will be ones to treasure close to you. XXX

  40. Sorry I missed this post when it was first published.

Just had to add my condolences to everyone else's for you.

I never knew my dad's parents, and my mam's parents both died when I was only three. I have always been envious of others who have had grandparents for a long time and it sounds like you have some super memories of your little granddad. Cherish those forever.

Your little grandma sounds wonderful, making you laugh with her little quip at such a sad time for her.

Love and hugs to you and your family.
